The dog breeds popular in Virginia are similar to those that tend to be popular across the whole United States. For instance, Labrador Retrievers are extremely popular in the state, and Labs are one of the most popular dog breeds across the United States, too.

However, there are a few surprising additions that you may not expect, such as the Beagle. Below, we’ll go down the list of the most popular dog breeds in Virginia based on the AKC database and other organization’s data.

The 9 Most Popular Dog Breeds in Virginia

1. Labrador Retriever

It should be of no surprise that the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in Virginia. These dogs are known for their friendly and outgoing nature. They’re intelligent, obedient, and can make wonderful family pets. They’re good with children of all ages, as well as adults. Plus, they’re widely available.

Labs are often used as service dogs, search and rescue dogs, and therapy dogs due to their versatility and trainability. They’re quite active, though. Therefore, it is recommended that only active families adopt them. Otherwise, their exercise needs can be a bit much.

2. German Shepherd

German Shepherds are also widely available. They’re known for their loyalty and intelligence. Most people recognize them due to their police and military work. However, they can also be good family dogs when properly socialized.

That said, many people don’t recognize how much work these dogs are. They’re very active and require lots of socialization to avoid fear-based aggression. If they aren’t introduced to many people and places as puppies, they may see things as threats that aren’t.

These canines have double coats that shed quite a bit, as well. However, their coats are also relatively low maintenance, so they don’t require much bathing or anything of that sort.

3. Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are another friendly dog breed that is a popular family companion. They’re very similar to Labs, and they are popular for many of the same reasons. They’re highly trainable, as well, which makes them suitable for therapy and service work.

Their beautiful coats are a bit longer, so they require regular grooming. They’re a bit more work than the Lab for this reason. However, their coats are very beautiful and tend to be a selling point of the breed.

These dogs are good with other animals and children. They make wonderful pets when properly trained and socialized.

4. French Bulldog

French Bulldogs have become more and more popular over the years. They are now the most popular breed in the United States. They’re particularly popular in urban areas, as they do very well in apartments and smaller spaces.

Sadly, these dogs are prone to health problems. Their shortened snouts make it harder for them to breathe, which can lead to all sorts of health problems. For instance, they often aren’t allowed on airplanes because of their overheating risk. They’re also more at risk for complications during surgery.

5. Beagle

Beagles are small hounds known for their laidback nature and strong sense of smell. They’re very friendly, allowing them to make great family pets. They’re also used for scent work of all sorts, including hunting. Originally, they were utilized to track rabbits.

These dogs usually come with tri-colored coats, which include black, brown, and white. They have a short coat that is relatively easy to take care of, though they do shed.

6. Poodle

Poodles were once very popular dogs, but they have slowly moved down the list as other breeds become more well-known. These dogs come in three main sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. While these dogs can vary a bit, they are all counted as part of the same breed. Smaller dogs are more common in urban areas, but they do require a lot of exercise, like their larger cousins.

These canines are highly intelligent, which also means that they require lots of mental stimulation. Otherwise, they can become bored and destructive.

They are highly trainable, though, able to learn a range of complex tasks. People often associate Poodles with big, fancy haircuts, but many companion animals are kept short to keep grooming simple. Still, they do require regular professional haircuts and some daily grooming at home.

7. Boxer

Boxers are very active, friendly dogs that are a great option for more active dog owners. They are affectionate and love their people, which is commonly why they are so well-loved. They are very loyal to their families, as well. However, they aren’t as trainable as some other dogs on this list.

This breed has a shorter coat and a distinctive square-shaped muzzle. They require quite a bit of exercise, though, which can make them more challenging to care for if you’re more laid back. We recommend these dogs for larger, very active families.

8. Dachshund

Dachshunds are widely recognized thanks to their elongated bodies and very short legs. They may look funny, but they were originally bred to follow animals into their den—hence their short legs. Therefore, while they may look like toy dogs, they are hounds through and through.

This breed comes in three coat types: smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired. All of these types are the same except for their coat length and texture.

Often, these dogs are clever and curious. You’d imagine that would translate into easy training, but they are also very independent. They think for themselves and don’t always listen to their owners.

9. Rottweiler

Rottweilers are pretty popular in Virginia. They’re strong, protective dogs that have serious guarding instincts. They may be good companion animals with proper socialization, but they are more prone to fear-based aggression than some other breeds. It’s important to socialize them properly from a young age.

These dogs are also a bit of work. They require regular grooming, as they tend to shed a bit. Brushing them a few times a week can help control this shedding. They’re also pretty active, so you should plan on exercising them for around an hour a day.dogster paw divider

Final Thoughts

Virginia isn’t unique when it comes to their favorite dog breeds. Many popular dog breeds are also popular across the nation, such as the Labrador Retriever. However, some dogs are uniquely popular in Virginia, like the Beagle.

Of course, if you’re considering adopting a dog, you don’t have to limit yourself to this list. Some breeders specialize in tons of other dog breeds in Virginia. However, dog breeds are popular for a reason, so this list is a good place to start.
