Sharing your home with a dog can be a magical experience. You have a companion by your side when you’re in the mood to watch television, go out for a long walk, or spend the night on the porch enjoying the weather. This is especially true if you own a Shih Tzu. These precious little dogs were bred to be companions of Chinese royalty. Once they made their way around the world, their loyal and affectionate ways secured them a place in people’s hearts. But for some dog owners, there’s more to life with a dog than having them by your side. There are times when pet owners are feeling down, or simply need to destress, and a cuddle from their best friend is the answer. But does a Shih Tzu like to cuddle?
If you have a Shih Tzu in your home and enjoy cuddling with your canine best pals, you’re in luck. In most situations, a Shih Tzu would love a cuddle from their loving owner. As with all dog breeds, however, not every Shih Tzu is the same. While most of these little dogs are game to cuddle up and spend time with their people, you will find a few in which cuddling isn’t their thing. Let’s take a look at Shih Tzus and cuddling so you’ll know what to expect when spending your life with these precious dogs.
Shih Tzus and Cuddles
With a history of being bred for companionship, it isn’t surprising that most Shih Tzus enjoy showing their owners lots of love and attention. You’ve heard certain breeds people like to refer to as lap dogs, right? That’s a Shih Tzu. If their owners will allow it, they’ll gladly spend as much time as possible on their lap, by their side, or trailing along behind them as they journey through the house. This sweet disposition is one of the many reasons most Shih Tzus enjoy cuddles. But it’s not the only reason. Let’s take a look at a few of the other reasons why a Shih Tzu likes to cuddle.
Strong Bonds
With Shih Tzus being so loving and loyal to their owners, it’s not surprising that they can form very strong bonds with them. This bond lets the Shih Tzu know they can turn to their owners in a time of need. While your pooch could be open to cuddles any time throughout the day, they may come seeking their own when they need comfort.
Warmth
In case you didn’t notice, Shih Tzus are small dogs. Sure, they have luxurious hair but that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to get cold from time to time. Cuddling helps them conserve their body heat so don’t be surprised to find your Shih Tzu up for a cuddle when the weather turns chilly.
Instincts
Shih Tzus may also enjoy cuddling due to their instincts. As puppies, dogs cuddle with their mothers for nourishment, protection, and warmth. It’s possible your pooch feels a natural instinct to cuddle with those who offer them these basic needs.
Do All Shih Tzus Like to Cuddle?
While dogs within the same breed often share the same mannerisms and temperaments, each one has a unique personality. As we’ve mentioned, most Shih Tzus love interactions like cuddles with their families. That doesn’t mean every dog of this breed is going to feel the same way. There are Shih Tzus out there who aren’t cuddlers. You’ll also notice that younger Shih Tzus aren’t as focused on cuddling and loving their owners as they are playing. You may see all that change, however, as the dog ages.
Summary
Shih Tzus are amazing dogs that are full of love and loyalty. While every dog has its own personality, overall, this breed is one of those that doesn’t mind snuggling up with their owners for a nice cuddle. If you’re looking for an affectionate dog breed to spend your days with, a Shih Tzu may just be your answer.
